The idea and strategy for a Souths Juniors Foundation has come from a pure grassroots belief that South Sydney District Junior Rugby League Football Club has always been the starting point of developing young kids into champion NRL Rabbitoh players. It is a true family environment when you play for Souths Juniors whether it be at the junior level or as an NRL player. Many remain Souths players for life! The 5 key pillars will be delivered by our Souths Juniors team and our wonderful group of over 700 volunteers. We encourage you to support the Souths Juniors Foundation to help us to evolve and keep developing Champions.

Souths Juniors continue to foster the great game of rugby league in our local area since 25th April 1908. Financially supporting over 3,000 players each season to play the game by covering registration costs, providing jerseys, shorts and socks along with insurance cover and fees for ground hire and referees, we continue to be a leading organisation in junior sport. Our support enables both players and volunteers from all backgrounds to become involved in rugby league, leading to further opportunities that our great game provides. We continue to produce NRL players for the Rabbitohs and other NRL clubs year in year out as well as giving all the opportunity to grow both on and off the field.

Your support for our foundation will allow us to continue to provide these opportunities, to evolve and improve what we do to get the very best outcomes in the future.

Importance of Your Support

At Souths Juniors we are very proud of our history of providing the local community with an opportunity to achieve their rugby league dreams.

From our first game played on April 25th, 1908, to the formation of The Juniors licensed club in 1959 that was built to nurture, support and grow the game in the district, our junior league has always been a leader in community sport. As the great game of rugby league continues to evolve, we must also grow with it. We want to continue to provide “The Best for The Best” and add value to what we already do. Let’s widen our reach, capitalise on what we do well now and improve and grow into the future.

Over the last 115 years we have seen several greats come through the ranks and in the early days go on to play for South Sydney Rabbitohs. In more recent times our junior players have had opportunities across other clubs to reach Australian and International stardom, both on and off the field. It is a rich history we are immensely proud of. We have now recognised there is more we can do to develop these talented men and women.

Where does your investment go?

Overall – to continue to provide the players and volunteers of the South Sydney District Junior Rugby Football League with the best we can give them. Free registration, jerseys, shorts, socks, insurance, field hire, equipment and referee’s costs to name a few of the areas of our focused investment for our local rugby league community. However, this extends further with the formation of the 5 pillars and outlined below are the tangible benefits you will be assisting us achieve.

Pillar 1 – The Junior Bunnies Academy

Includes tours of the Mid North Coast, Snowy Mountains and Northwest NSW that provide our players with extra development, off field experiences that are often beyond reach and to continue the fostering of relationships between Souths Juniors and Country Rugby League regions. Further to this it will assist us to develop a program in the Sydney metropolitan region where these players are tested against opposition from other NRL Club development squads giving our players the first taste of the elite pathway to becoming a Rabbitoh.

Pillar 2 – Elite Player Development

Engaging high level coaches, mentors, and other educators to provide our elite players with the tools required to excel on the pathway to the NRL with the Rabbitohs as well as succeed in life away from rugby league. Funding of this pillar will allow us to develop educational programs for these players that have a holistic approach to their future development including partnering with other rugby league programs to run camps that will provide both retention and recruitment opportunities.

Pillar 3 – Female Participation and Pathways

Creating a female Junior Development program that shadows our Junior Bunnies and provides the springboard from junior league to the NRLW pathway with the Rabbitohs. Includes providing the Jerseys, Shorts and Socks for all female players in the South Sydney Junior League across our mini, mod, and international age groups. Invest in the female pathway to upskill our players and coaches to give them the best chance to succeed through the purchasing of equipment, engaging elite coaches to coach both our players and coaches alike and provide the best knowledge on physical and personal development.

Pillar 4 – Souths Juniors A Grade Competition

Invest to sustain the only standalone metropolitan Sydney A Grade competition in providing the necessary equipment and resources to enable it to not only continue but also prosper. Includes Medical Equipment, Strapping, Video Technology amongst many other things that are required to run a successful open age competition. This not only provides a game for our local A Grade players but also creates a competition that is as professional as possible where the Rabbitohs can continue to send their pathways players back knowing that they are able to monitor and assess performance as well as they could in any other lower tier competition in NSW.

Pillar 5 – Brain Health Awareness and Return to Play Program

Investing in a best practice Brain Health and Return to Play Program that we have engaged in through our partners Neuroflex. Provides accurate data for all players that take up the option for Brain Health baseline testing providing the information for the correct Return to Play protocol post a concussive event that occurs.

The Souths Juniors Foundation, with your valued support, will ensure that the game for boys and girls prospers forever in the South Sydney Area.

Glory, Glory to South Sydney!!

The Academy provides an opportunity for Souths Juniors talented under 13, 14 and 15-year-old players to further their rugby league development via elite coaching and training programs that culminate in matches against other NRL districts and country regions.

It is the springboard to the Rabbitohs Elite Pathway and has seen many of our local juniors go on to forge NRL careers with the Rabbitohs including John Sutton, Alex Johnston, Campbell Graham, Cameron Murray, Nathan Merritt, Adam Reynolds and Craig Wing.

Focusing on Souths Juniors’ true elite players with a holistic approach to both on and off-field development including training and education to prepare them for the game and their lives post Rugby League.

Female participation is the real growth area of our game. Souths Juniors have already implemented its own female mini and mod league competition and have numerous clubs
and teams participating in the international age groups as well. The aim is to have our own development program for females that launches them into the Rabbitohs pathway and onto being future NRLW players. With an expected NRLW licence to go to the Rabbitohs in the near future, investment in this area will be an important part of the pathway to be the best in the business.

The Souths Juniors A grade competition is unique in
that it is the only standalone A grade competition of its
kind in metropolitan Sydney and it is a vital component
of the junior league. The standard continues to be high and it provides a
place for non-selected Rabbitohs pathway players to play weekly to remain fit and competitive when again considered for selection in Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup.
The A Grade Grand Final at Redfern Oval is always a
fitting finale to our season.

As the immediate, longer-term, and cumulative effects of concussion are becoming better understood, South Sydney Juniors is rolling out revolutionary concussion management technology, NeuroFlex®. Up to 3,000 junior players will undergo baseline testing. All Players 12 and over will be tested and players under 12 will be given the option of being tested. This baseline data, will allow the South Sydney Juniors and its clinical partners to objectively track players’ brain health over time, to quickly and accurately identify any changes that occur during their lifetime.

Your support for our foundation will allow us to continue to provide these opportunities, to evolve and improve what we do to get the very best outcomes in the future.
